THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake for Nintendo Switch
Table Of Content
Square Enix took to Twitter to make players aware they know about and are working to fix a Final Fantasy XVI bug that blocks NG+ progression. Amidst all the spraying red stuff and broken bodies, you’ll face off against a series of bosses that each have a specific weak point. This is highlighted at the beginning of each battle, so it’s not too hard to hit your mark, but the bosses give you a decent ruck all the same. Yes, it’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s a damn sight more interesting than just having enemies mindlessly run into a hail of lead. The House of the Dead makes you think fast, and encounters rarely get boring as the game always mixes up the type of foes it throws at you. Forever Entertainment's October 2019 tweet confirming the signing of the agreement to remake the first two House of the Dead games.

That said, complaints about the length ARE silly since it's a port of a 1996 game, come on, most anyone looking into this knows what they're in for. On its default setting the frame rate can judder frequently, which isn’t ideal for a game that requires quick reactions like this. The game has two endings available depending on whether the players destroy the Magician's controller and on the player's performance result during the game. James and Kate then learn that the late one-time CEO of the now-defunct DBR Corporation, Caleb Goldman, is responsible for the resurgence of undead. All of his messages and current plans were set in motion, even before his death.

Players use a light gun (or mouse, in the PC version) to aim and shoot at approaching zombies. The characters' pistols use magazines which hold 6 rounds; players reload by shooting away from the screen. When a player sustains damage or shoots a civilian, one point of health is removed.

Then I played to get better so my credits lasted longer, and eventually start 1cc-ing. And over the course of a school year, about 200 days to keep it simple, the various newsstands, pizzerias, and bodegas that had the arcade games I wanted to play would a earn a cool (shared) $100/year out of a year old at the end of the 80’s. @Zebetite Relax, the high scorers/1cc’ers and casual credit feeders are both valid from an operator and game dev standpoint. The operator doesn’t care where the money comes from, and the players don’t mind spending the money. In fact, the high scorers/1cc’ers can be even more valuable than the casuals as they’ll spend more money to just to get better. And when the earnings on a particular game plateaus and dives, it’s time to change it for a new one, rinse and repeat.

Although designed to improve typing skills, the game has been lauded by critics for its humor and originality. The game was released for arcades, Dreamcast and PC, while a revised version was released for the PlayStation 2 only in Japan. All mainline games have multiple endings, depending on how well the player did in terms of civilians rescued, shooting percentage, score, and lives left. Every main game except the last one has a "bad" ending, usually involving one of the characters transforming into a zombie. In the first game, the character turning was Sophie Richards.
While supported by the DBR Corporation and its own team of scientists, Curien's behavior becomes more erratic and his experiments take an inhumane and gruesome turn. The Curien Mansion, which serves as his home and laboratory, experiences an outbreak. In 2003, the first film, directed by Uwe Boll and produced by Brightlight Pictures, was released. Given a limited theatrical release with the intent of becoming a cult film, it served as a loose prequel to the game, but received very poor reviews and little box office return. Released in Japan exclusively for the Nintendo DS, the game is designed to help Japanese speakers improve their English language skills. Playing similar to the Typing of the Dead games, enemies are defeated when Japanese words shown on-screen are translated into English.
The House of the Dead is a quintessential old-school zombie blaster, for better or for worse. There’s nothing fancy about the bread-and-butter gameplay here, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Set in December 1998, the game follows AMS agents Thomas Rogan and G as they face hostile biologically-engineered creatures in the mansion of Dr. Curien, a mad scientist. Initially released to arcades, The House of the Dead was ported to the PC and Sega Saturn with downgraded graphics. In his pursuit of controlling life and death, DBR Corporation research director Dr. Curien descends into insanity.
THOD1 is a very special game for me, I would pump £1 after £1 into the arcade cabinet and even begged my dad for a Sega Saturn when I heard it was coming to the system. This is a complaint I see from people who don't understand that arcade games are played for 1ccs and high score runs. If you just credit feed every time you die then yeah, sure, it's "short" but you're not really playing the intended way and you're getting low scores... There are a few different endings to provide at least some replay value, but the control issues mean trying to get some of them (which requires a high degree of accuracy and skill) could have you tearing your own face off, ironically. Copious amounts of gore, zombies, diabolical acting, and a story that’s so thin it could have been penned on the back of a pizza box.
The games are divided into chapters, each of which culminates in a boss battle against usually massive, terrifying creatures. The bosses in the first four games as well as the sixth are all named after the Major Arcana of occult tarot. Simulating the arcade setting, each run gives you 10 continues that act as lives; once you run out, you can “buy” more by spending the points you’ve earned on the current run, otherwise, it’s game over. You earn points by finding bonus items like coins and (more commonly) defeating enemies. The points vary depending on where you aim and the enemy itself, which encourages more than just blind shooting.
Not entirely, mind you, but enough that things weren’t so frustrating. Let’s face it, though, when you’re playing a light gun game you want to feel like you’re holding a gun, and the Joy-Con is more gun-like than a Pro Controller (even if it’s a tiny gun like the one in Men in Black). For those who’ve been unfortunate enough to not have The House of the Dead in their lives up to this point, the game takes place in and around the Curien Mansion, as players try to put a stop to the evil Dr Curien and his laboratory. In 2013, I started my Ziff Davis career as an intern on PCMag's Software team.
It’s harder to gauge casual plays because it’s all dependent on total foot traffic and external factors like the immediate surrounding attractions. But those dedicated gamers, those are your real cash cows. Assuming you can find a control method that you’re happy enough with, the game itself is as entertaining as House of the Dead has ever been.
